Professor Karen Knapp

Karen is Head of Department and Associate Professor in Musculoskeletal Imaging and has been in academia for over 20 years after a clinical career in diagnostic radiography. She is known for her contributions to musculoskeletal imaging and work in the field of osteoporosis, significantly advancing the field of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis research. After nine years as Head of Medical Imaging, she is proud to lead the Department of Health and Care Professions, dedicated to advancing healthcare education and research and improving patient care.
Dr Jody Ede

Jody is a registered Intensive Care Unit nurse with two decades of clinical and managerial experience which includes clinical governance, research and education roles. Jody completed her NIHR Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship and was awarded her PhD in November 2022. Additionally, she is a chartered Human Factors and Ergonomics specialist (C.ErgHF), a globally recognised accreditation. Her expertise centres on enhancing system efficiency, driving digital innovations, and conducting thorough service evaluation. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher within the nursing academy and supported through an NIHR Development, Skills and Enhancement (DSE) award.
Dr Amy Hancock

Amy qualified as a Therapeutic Radiographer in 2006. Prior to becoming Director of Medical Imaging, Amy was employed as the Principal Therapeutic Radiographer for Research and Development at Weston Park Cancer Centre and previously worked at Sheffield Hallam University as a Senior Lecturer on the Radiotherapy and Oncology programmes.
Sue McAnulla

Sue has overall operational responsibility for the programmes in our department. She qualified as a Diagnostic Radiographer from University of Southampton in 1994 and enjoyed a varied clinical career focusing on MRI and clinical education before joining University of Exeter in 2009. She gained experience working within the NHS as both a general and cross-sectional radiographer and also worked in the private sector and industry through specialisation in MRI. Within the University she has held several academic leadership positions in relation to undergraduate and postgraduate education and has a keen personal interest in student experience, retention and success.
Dr Rob Meertens

Rob is a Diagnostic Radiographer by background and has been at the University since 2013 with research interests predominately around bone health diagnostics. Through his role as Director of Business Engagement and Innovation, he has seen the wide-ranging industrial interest in artificial intelligence applications applied to both bone health and radiology more generally and is working to strengthen our industry links in these areas.
Dr Amad Al-Azzawi

Amad is an experienced and dedicated educator who is well-versed in innovative teaching pedagogies and teaching students at different levels and coming from highly diverse backgrounds. He has over 15 years of experience as a practicing pharmacist, a university educator, and a research scholar spanning three countries: Iraq, United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Canada.
