About me:
Merlisa is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Health and Care Professions (Medical Imaging) at the University of Exeter, with specialist expertise in vascular ultrasound imaging. Her research interests focus on vascular health, vascular ultrasound imaging, and the role of vascular dysfunction in neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis.
Prior to joining the University of Exeter, she served as Head of the Department of Medical Imaging and Therapeutic Sciences at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in Cape Town, South Africa. In this role, she taught students enrolled in the BSc Diagnostic Ultrasound programme, examined Master's and Doctoral theses, and reviewed postgraduate research proposals.
With over 20 years of clinical experience in ultrasound, Merlisa has worked across both public and private healthcare sectors in South Africa, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. She currently holds an appointment as Adjunct Scholar at CPUT, where she continues to supervise Master’s and PhD students.
At the University of Exeter, she is the Programme Lead for the BSc Medical Imaging (Diagnostic Radiography), as well as the Time for Dementia Lead and Fitness to Practise Lead within Medical Imaging. Merlisa has also contributed to research governance as a member of the University of Exeter Medical School and Health and Care Professions Research Ethics Committee.
Merlisa strives to be a compassionate and principled leader who serves others and advocates for what is right and just. She is committed to empowering students and colleagues while fostering an inclusive and equitable academic environment. Through her leadership and research, she aims to strategically support others’ growth while continuing to advance in her own academic and professional career.
