Health and Care Professions MSK Research Theme Lead 

 

Fay joined the Medical Imaging department as a Lecturer (Education and Research) in 2022. Since taking on this role Fay has led the development of modules for the MSc Degree Apprenticeship (DA), as well as leading modules across the BSc and BSc DA courses. Fay also provides academic and research supervision for both undergraduate and postgraduate projects, including leading the NIHR-funded Undergraduate Internship Programme. 

 

Fay has recently been awarded a Development, Skills and Expertise Fellowship by the NIHR, and therefore has moved away from teaching to focus on patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE), implementation research, and applied MedTech development.

 

Dr Manning is also currently engaged in a number of industry partnerships, where she specialises in bringing patient/lay perspectives to the design and implementation of new innovations, increasing marketability and adoption within healthcare settings.

Career:

Fay has an interdisciplinary background. She began with degrees in Sports and Exercise Science (BSc) and Sports and Exercise Science Physiology (MSc) before completing a PhD in Biomedical Physics at Exeter, where she focused her research on the spine and back pain.

 

After completing her PhD in 2019, Fay relocated to the West Midlands where she took a combined role in the NHS as a Senior Research Assistant in Rheumatology and a Bone Density Technician in an Osteoporosis Service. Through her role in the osteoporosis service Fay gained experience in Fracture Liaison Services and led clinical audits, staff training, and quality and assurance within the technical team.

 

Fay returned to Exeter as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in 2021 to work on the FLEXI Study (FaLls EXercise Implementation) study, funded by NIHR ARC). Fay continues to work with this project in her Lectureship role, supporting publication and dissemination through international conferences (e.g. World Falls Congress, EU Falls Festival, European Implementation Collaborative). 

With the support of the DSE Fellowship Fay is currently developing a consistent portfolio of bridging the industry-academia-healthcare pathway working start-up, small and medium enterprises as well as international companies. Her focus on improving design and implementation of medical technology, interventions and softwares (including AI) with the integration os aptient and stakeholder voices is supporting safer practice, decreased inequalities and healthcare savings.
