Mrs Chaleigh O'Brien
Lecturer in Medical Imaging
Medical Imaging (Radiography)
I am currently a Lecturer in Medical Imaging, contributing to both the BSc (Hons) Undergraduate and the Degree Apprenticeship programmes. My teaching spans a range of modules, with a focus on medical ultrasound, which is my principal area of expertise.
I serve as the temporary Module Lead for RAD2003DA – Practice Foundations 2, a module that introduces students to the theoretical foundations of a variety of imaging modalities. I am also Co-Lead for PAM3022 – Professional Skills for Radiographers, a multidisciplinary module that explores the legislative and professional frameworks guiding radiographic practice. It also addresses key professional, managerial, and inter-professional challenges encountered in clinical settings.
In addition, I contribute to several other modules within the Medical Imaging programmes and play an active role in preparing students for clinical placements, particularly through practical teaching in radiographic positioning laboratories.
Prior to joining the University of Exeter, I worked as a reporting sonographer for over 15 years. My clinical expertise spans general abdominal, gynaecological, small parts, and vascular ultrasound. I have held specialist roles in paediatric imaging at dedicated children’s hospitals and have also gained experience as a veterinary sonographer.
